“Our experience with Illinois Lightning was mixed. There are some committed coaches, players, and families within the organization, but the overall experience appears to depend heavily on the individual team rather than a consistent organization-wide standard. One major concern was the organization’s leadership structure. Families may reasonably assume that an organization of this size is overseen by an active board of directors with meaningful checks, accountability, and a process for addressing concerns. In our experience, leadership appeared to be concentrated primarily with a director and treasurer, with little visible independent oversight beyond that. Communication from the director often felt more focused on selling families on the organization and controlling the narrative than openly addressing concerns. Questions were not always met with clear, direct, or consistent answers, and the approach could feel transactional rather than centered on player development and family trust. Communication, organization, coaching consistency, player development, and clearly defined expectations were also ongoing concerns. Decisions regarding instruction, positions, playing opportunities, and team operations did not always appear to follow a consistent plan. Families considering Illinois Lightning should ask detailed questions before committing. Ask who has actual decision-making authority, whether an active board exists, how complaints are reviewed, who holds leadership accountable, and what happens when a coach or family raises a legitimate concern. Also ask who will be coaching the team, how practices are structured, and how development, positions, and playing time are handled. There may be teams within the organization that provide a positive experience, but families should carefully evaluate the specific coaches and leadership involved rather than relying solely on the organization’s sales presentation or reputation. ”

“One area that prospective families should understand is that the organization operates primarily as a tournament-only program and does not have dedicated home fields. For some families this may not be a concern, but others may expect regular home facilities, league games, or a more traditional organizational structure. Given the program costs, families should carefully evaluate whether the overall value proposition aligns with their expectations. Another area for improvement is organizational leadership and conflict resolution. During our time with the program, multiple families raised concerns regarding team operations, communication, and player development. Unfortunately, many families felt those concerns were not thoroughly investigated or meaningfully addressed. Whether the concerns were ultimately valid or not, parents should feel that feedback is heard, evaluated fairly, and responded to transparently. Travel softball organizations are strongest when coaches, families, and leadership work together with open communication and accountability. Increased transparency, more active engagement from leadership, and a clearer process for addressing concerns would significantly improve the overall experience for players and families.”

“Our family's experience with Illinois Lightning Softball was disappointing. We joined expecting a positive environment where player development, communication, and player safety would be priorities. Unfortunately, that wasn't our experience. Communication from the coaching staff was inconsistent, especially when concerns were raised. We also felt there was a lack of accountability following a significant injury our daughter suffered during the season. As parents, that was very difficult to overlook. From a softball perspective, player development and opportunities did not always seem to be based on the players on the roster. Guest players were often given priority over rostered players, making it challenging for committed athletes to earn meaningful opportunities. Every family's experience may be different, and there are certainly good people involved with the organization. However, based on our experience, we ultimately decided to move our daughter to a program where she feels valued, is developing as a player, and enjoys coming to the field again. We hope Illinois Lightning continues to improve its communication, accountability, and focus on the experience of its players and families.”
